West Virginia is unfortunately home to the highest level of drug use related fatalities in the United States, with 32.2 deaths for every 100,000 residents. The 2nd highest percentage of tobacco users live in West Virginia as well, with 25.7 percent of the population admitting to smoking cigarettes regularly. As the 4th most obese state in the United States, West Virginia’s residents overwhelmingly report they do not get in enough physical activity in their daily lives at 30.8 percent. The rate of diabetics is high as well, the 2nd highest in the country at 14.5 percent of the population living with diabetes. The state of West Virginia also has the 2nd highest amount of preventable hospitalizations due to these problems. Residents of West Virginia report the highest levels of frequent mental and physical distress too, at 15.6 percent and 18.6 percent respectively, more than in any other part of the country.

On a positive note, West Virginia has the highest score for preventing the spread of infectious disease. Rates of chlamydia and pertussis are lowest in the country, and the prevalence of salmonella is the 4th lowest. West Virginia also claims the 10th best score for levels of uninsured residents with only 7.3 percent of the population not having any health insurance. Despite this, however, West Virginia has the 2nd highest rate of premature death and is in the bottom 10 states for both cancer and cardiovascular disease-related fatalities as well.
