Washington ranks 7th overall in the list of healthiest states in the U.S. The infant mortality rate is 3rd lowest in the country at 4.5 deaths for every 1,000 births, and the prevalence of infants born with a low birthweight is 4th lowest at only 6.4 percent. The state ranks 5th overall in terms of preventable hospitalizations, despite only having the 20th best access to primary care physicians at 141.4 primary care doctors for every 100,000 Washington residents. Also, 91 percent of the population of Washington report they get proper levels of physical activity in their everyday lives, which is the 3rd highest percentage in the nation. Washington also has the 9th fewest proportion of smokers living in the state with only 15 percent of adults reporting they smoke cigarettes.

Washington does have a low rate of high school graduations, 41st in the country with only 78.2 percent of high school students reaching graduation. Despite that figure, Washington has positive numbers for the rate of premature deaths, number of diabetics in the population, cardiovascular disease fatalities, and infectious disease prevention, all of which are ranked in the top 10 when compared to the rest of the country.
