The incidence rate of deaths due to drug abuse in Virginia is lower than the national average. In fact, it is the 7th lowest in the United States at only 10.1 deaths for every 100,000 residents. Virginia also claims the 8th lowest percentage of children living at or below the poverty line with a statistic of 13.6 percent. The violent crime rate in Virginia is third lowest in the nation as well, contributing to a sense of a safe community and neighborliness. A low number of Virginians report living with any sort of distress as well, be it mental or physical, with rates around 10% of chronic mental or physical troubles.

Virginia does have the lowest percentage of children compliant with immunizations at only 64.4 percent. This trend continues into adolescence and adulthood as Virginia residents remain to be noncompliant with CDC guidelines on vaccinations. Virginia also has an above average rate of diabetics among the population, with 10.3 percent of residents claiming to live with diabetes. This rate is higher than in 27 other states and could be reasonably lowered with a strong public health campaign. The funding for public health initiatives in Virginia is lower than average though, with only $71 per capita allocated annually for public health, things are not likely to change without a higher investment into health education.
