The greater Memphis area has 7 hospitals available to provide service to residents of the metropolitan area. Access to healthcare is not so much of an issue, but affordability is a problem. Cancer rates in the greater Memphis area are higher than those of the rest of Tennessee and higher than the national average. The obesity rate is higher as well in Memphis, topping off at 37 percent. 33 percent of adults report being diagnosed with high blood pressure, and 47 percent of adults have been told they have elevated cholesterol levels.

There is a disproportionate figure among Memphis hospitals for the birthweight of African American newborns. For unknown reasons, the Memphis community has noticed that infants born to African American couples are twice as likely to have a low birthweight compared to Caucasian or Hispanic babies. African American babies also have almost twice the frequency of preterm births. The diabetes rate in Memphis is also much higher than the national average, with 18 percent of adults being affected by diabetes. To address the issues around Memphis, Baptist Memorial Health Care has surveyed the community and begun to implement measures deemed crucial by the local population, focusing on mental health and substance abuse issues.
