One of the serious issues affecting public health in South Carolina is the quality of infectious disease control. South Carolina was rated the 2nd worst state for infectious diseases in the entire country, with a high prevalence of salmonella and a shockingly high 588.2 cases per 100,000 population of chlamydia. South Carolina also ranks among the lowest in terms of immunization rates for both children and adolescents and are trending toward even worse vaccine coverage with the rate of immunized children dropping more every year. The likelihood of premature death is higher in South Carolina compared to most states as well, since only 9 states received lower scores in that marker.

The positive news in South Carolina is the relatively low rate of alcohol abuse, 15th best in the nation with 16.6 percent of adults reporting they tend to drink excessively. South Carolina also has the 20th best score for preventable hospitalizations, which is impressive when it should be considered that 34 states have better access to primary care providers than South Carolina does. Dentists are not very abundant in South Carolina as well with only 48 dentists for every 100,000 residents, ranking 44th in the U.S.
