The city of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania has spent time and energy conducting research to identify areas of improvement and focus for their public health investments. One of the goals they’ve identified is reducing the rate of childhood obesity. In order to accomplish this, Pittsburgh has been integrating healthier foods into school lunches and encouraging proper amounts of physical activity every day. Pittsburgh also identifies that behavioral health is becoming one of the greatest challenges to early learning and is increasing the attention that pediatricians give to their patients to help screen for early detection of behavioral health issues.
Pittsburgh has doubled down efforts on trying to manage the opioid crisis, focusing on helping drug-addicted babies and mothers successfully recover from addiction and reintegrate into society with a clean slate. They also have set a goal for fewer visits from seniors to the emergency department and are working to providing in-home care for senior citizens to help properly identify any medical issues before the problems become too great to manage independently. This work includes screening for cancers and teaching individuals how to best advocate their own medical needs when visiting with a healthcare professional.
