Located in the central region of the United States is Oklahoma. Formed from what was originally Indian Territory, Oklahoma joined the Union on November 16, 1907. While Oklahoma was still designated as Indian Territory, European-American settlers flooded the territory to establish farms and homes following the Indian Appropriation Act. When Oklahoma was eventually incorporated into the Union, it became the 5th youngest state in the United States.

Oklahoma is a mostly rural state, meaning large portions of its landmass are made up of farms and unoccupied plots of land. However, among the 50 states and Washington D.C., Oklahoma has the 13th most hospitals. Despite its large number of hospitals and available care, Oklahoma has the 10th highest number of smokers in the USA. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 21% of adults in Oklahoma are active smokers. This resulted in Oklahoma being the 6th highest in cancer deaths per 100,000 people according to America’s Health Rankings annual report in 2015. Also, among leading causes of death, Oklahoma was ranked 2nd in the heart disease category according to the CDC in 2015.

Despite Oklahoma’s health and wellness challenges, it was listed as one of the most improved states in America’s Health Rankings most recent annual report. In the 2017 report, Oklahoma had moved ahead 3 spots. Today, Oklahoma is the 43rd healthiest state in America.
