New Mexico has the 2nd highest number of drug-related deaths per capita compared to the rest of the U.S. with 24.7 deaths for every 100,000 in population. The state also is home to the lowest high school graduation rate at just 68.6 percent. More children live in poverty in New Mexico than in any other state as well, with 29.5 percent of children growing up below the poverty line. New Mexico also has the 7th worst infectious disease program in the country and levels of chlamydia and pertussis throughout the state are higher than they are in most of the country. Violent crime is also a factor that attributes to New Mexico’s poor community and environment score, having the 3rd highest rate of violent crimes in the nation.

The rate of death caused by cancer is also exceptionally low and ranks as 4th overall.
