St. Louis is a city trying to improve public health and awareness in order to meet the goals set for the “Healthy People 2020” target. Some of the most significant changes St. Louis has pushed for include a higher number of adults possessing health insurance, almost 100 percent of children having health insurance coverage, providing non-MD routes towards primary care providers, and pushing for adults to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.

St. Louis does struggle with a few statistics, such as the rate of adults with diabetes, which at 13.5 percent is higher than the U.S. average and higher than the Missouri state average. The rates of obesity and overweight adults in St. Louis is higher than the 2020 target, but the trend over recent years has shown a steady decrease in the number of out of shape St. Louis residents and hopefully the city will reach the goal in time. The rate of strokes and heart attacks in St. Louis is much higher than the national average, with the rate of heart disease deaths being one of the highest in the country. Changing this statistic is going to be accomplished through a combined effort of nutrition and fitness education.
