Michigan has the 10th highest percentage of smokers in the country with 20.7 percent of people identifying as a regular tobacco user. Also, 20 percent of the population admits to drinking excessively, and the 15.7 drug deaths for every 100,000 residents is more than in 30 other states. The high school graduation rate is low in Michigan as well with only 79.8 percent of high school students reaching graduation, ranking Michigan 36th in the country.
The public health program in Michigan is not very extensive, however, made evident by the large number of residents that fall behind on immunizations. Only 76 percent of residents in Michigan are up-to-date on their Tdap immunizations, a lower percentage than 47 other states. Michigan also is the 7th worst state for the percentage of children up-to-date on vaccinations at only 67.6 percent. The number of preventable hospitalizations is the 12th highest in the United States, despite having the 6th most abundant amount of primary care doctors per capita. Michigan ranks 36th in the country for its violent crime rate and 38th in the country for the number of children living below the poverty line.
