The state of Maine enjoys some health benefits from the quality of the air, being rated the 10th best in the country for clean air free of pollution. There is also the 2nd lowest rate of violent crimes in the country, promoting a strong sense of community and trust.  Maine has many physicians residing in the state, the 7th most in the country per capita. They are 12th in the country for the rate of cardiovascular disease-related deaths, but 39th for cancer-related fatalities. Maine also has a relatively high infant mortality rate at 6.9 deaths for every 1,000 births, which happens to be 39th in the nation. The 2nd highest rate of pertussis cases is in Maine as well, with 41.9 cases for every 100,000 people. Smoking is also prevalent in Maine, where 19.5 percent of people admit to frequent tobacco use.

Despite the high rate of pertussis cases, the infectious disease prevention program in Maine has made a positive impact, with the 2nd fewest cases of chlamydia and the 3rd fewest cases of salmonella. The public health funding in Maine is nothing phenomenal, however, with only $89 spent per capita on programs meant to educate the population on health issues.
