A severe need for dentists, mental health treatment, and substance abuse clinics has been identified for the greater Louisville area in Kentucky. The most densely populated areas of the city were also associated with the greatest need for these health facilities, with the suburbs reporting satisfaction with the existing levels of service. Despite the need for these facilities, residents of Louisville reported that 93 percent saw a primary care doctor in the previous year, and Louisville parents maintain an impressive 91 percent immunization compliance rate. 99 percent of Louisville’s general population claims to have health insurance, so access to healthcare and public knowledge about the importance of having insurance isn’t so much something that Louisville needs to address.
35 percent of Louisville residents report that the largest issue with visiting the doctor was the cost of healthcare. Residents reported that what they would like to see addressed in the Louisville community would be more attention to the elderly and the aging population, better support systems for those dealing with alcohol or substance abuse, and a way to address the growing rate of obesity among the Louisville population. Louisville seems to be a thriving community that is taking charge and addressing the issues important to those living there.
