San Diego boasts a very low number of high school students with substance abuse issues. Only 3 percent of students admitted to binge drinking, a rate much lower than in many other cities. The city values a healthy lifestyle that is made evident by the 22.9 percent obesity rate, far lower than the national average. Over 50 percent of adults claim to exercise and attempt to stay in shape regularly, and only 9 percent of San Diego residents admit to using tobacco.

Unemployment in San Diego is rather high, however, well above the national average at 7.5 percent. Nevertheless, only 18.7 percent of children grow up living in poverty in San Diego. The highest cause of death in San Diego is cancer with 146.3 deaths for every 100,000 residents, followed by heart disease with a similar statistic of 130.2 deaths for every 100,000 people. There is a strangely high incidence rate of Tuberculosis infection in San Diego with 7.3 new cases for every 100,000 people, most likely attributed to the tourism industry and the turnover of international travelers that unknowingly bring the dangerous disease into the United States.
