Tucson has identified mental and behavioral health as high priorities on the list of public health concerns, particularly focusing on anxiety and depression and substance abuse. Tucson public health leaders have identified a large amount of youth struggling with anxiety and have chosen to target schools as the first site of educating the community on healthy ways to handle stress and mental health issues. Tucson also identifies schools as a place to focus their efforts on substance abuse issues, finding that an enormous 31.5 percent of teenagers reported to drink alcohol regularly, as well as the 18.3 percent of teens who routinely smoke marijuana. Tucson reports that 4 of the top 20 causes of death in the city are due to substance abuse related issues and trying to educate in the school system is likely to reach students before they develop bad habits.

Hospitals in Tucson are implementing a new depression screening tool to try and identify at-risk youth and patients struggling with depression to lower suicide rates and to try and encourage healthy communication about mental health. With more awareness and attention, they hope to pioneer an early detection program and save lives all over the country.
