Arkansas ranks in the bottom 5 of states for their number of smokers, obesity rates, and levels of physical activity in adults. 24.9 percent of adults identify as smokers, 34.5 percent of the population is obese, and 34.2 percent of adults report having sedentary lifestyles. It also has the fewest dentists per capita of all states, with only 40.9 dentists per 100,000 population. The diabetes rate of 12.6 percent is number 44 in the nation, and the rate of cardiovascular disease deaths is 44th at 317.3 deaths per 100,000 individuals.  Also ranking low is the prevalence of cancer-related deaths, 46th in the country with 218.1 deaths per 100,000 people. Finally, Arkansas scored 45th in the country for the rate of infectious disease and 45th for levels of violent crime.

On the other hand, Arkansas reports 15.3 percent of adults admit to drinking excessively, the 9th best rate out of all other states. Arkansas also boasts some progressive laws regarding AEDs and good Samaritan policies. It is state law to protect anyone using an AED that acts in good faith from any criminal or civil liabilities. This protection even extends to trained medical professionals acting in an emergency outside of their normal duties.
